Bright's got this ridiculous amount of stuff to do and honestly, you're gonna need more than a weekend. Camp Crusty sits smack in the middle of all of it. The Ovens River runs about 400 metres from your tent peg, the Murray to Mountains trail passes practically through town, and Mount Buffalo is a 20-minute drive up one of the best roads in Victoria. Not bad for a caravan park.
Reckon you'll be sleeping in? Doubt it. The morning light hits the ranges and suddenly everyone's lacing up boots.
The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail is 116 kilometres of mostly flat cycling through some seriously pretty country. You don't have to do all of it. Even a casual arvo ride into Porepunkah and back is worth it. Hire bikes are available in town if you didn't drag yours up the Great Alpine Road. The Ovens River is brilliant for a swim in summer, decent fly fishing if that's your thing, and the kids will spend three hours throwing rocks into it no questions asked.
Mount Buffalo National Park is where things get properly good. The Gorge day walk, the Cathedral, the Horn at 1723 metres. Snow in winter, wildflowers come spring. It doesn't get old. There's a reason people keep coming back here year after year.
And look, not every activity needs to involve a hill. Bright Brewery does a tasting paddle worth every dollar. The town has a solid farmers market on Saturday mornings. Wandering the main street in autumn when the leaves are going absolutely mental, that's an activity too.
Families, solo riders, couples who've already argued about which trail to take. Camp Crusty gets all of them. The activities around Bright genuinely suit everyone whether you're chasing a proper summit or just want somewhere peaceful to read a book by the river. No judgement either way.
We've put together a rough guide to the best local walks, swimming holes, and day trips, so check the noticeboard near the amenities block when you arrive. Or have a yarn with us at check-in, we know a few spots that don't make the tourist brochures.
All these activities are a lot easier when you've got a good base camp. Have a look at our accommodation options and lock something in before the good sites go. Weekends fill up heaps faster than you'd think, especially through autumn and the ski season.
